Serving Highlands County, Florida

Implementation of the Trails Network

Close to 450 miles of existing and proposed trails are designated in the Highlands County master plan for blueways, greenways, trails, and bikeways, including approximately:
  • 43 miles of equestrian trails;
  • 30 miles of canoe trails;
  • 195 miles of shared bikeways, and
  • 180 miles of separate multi-use trails (hiking and bicycling).

This does not include trails in the State Parks and on the thousands of acres of conservation management lands in the County. (Go to Links to access websites of the organizations which are charged with maintaining these trails.)

The first six multi-use paths--four in Sebring and two in Lake Placid--are already completed and in use. Several canoe trails and shared bikeways also have been finished.

Once completed, the Highlands County trails will be an important link in the Florida Greenways and Trails System and in the National Scenic Trails System.

The trails will connect Sebring, Avon Park, and Lake Placid. They also will provide connecting corridors to trail systems in neighboring counties. Each of the municipalities has endorsed the concept of connecting trails and is promoting strong intergovernmental coordination in order to implement the master plan.

The trails will be adjacent to, or in very close proximity to, six elementary schools, four middle schools, two high schools, and a community college. They will connect neighborhoods, business districts, two airports, and several county parks.
